Cement Calculator: How Many Bags of Cement Do You Need?
Calculate exactly how many bags of Portland cement to buy, including 94 lb, 80 lb, 60 lb, and 50 kg bags, leftover cement, sand, gravel, water, brand SKUs, and ready-mix comparison.
Important: two different products
This calculator is for Portland Cement, which is pure cement with no aggregate. You mix it with sand and gravel yourself. It is not for pre-mixed concrete bags such as Quikrete 80 lb Concrete Mix, which already includes cement, sand, and gravel. For pre-mixed bags, use the concrete bag calculator.

Portland Cement vs. Pre-Mixed Concrete Bags: Which Should You Buy?
Portland Cement
Examples: Quikrete #100015 and Sakrete #65200940. A 94 lb bag is about 1 ft3 of pure cement.
Choose it when mixing more than 0.5 yd3, you have bulk sand and gravel, or you need a specific cement:sand:gravel ratio.
Pre-Mixed Concrete Bags
Examples: Quikrete Concrete Mix #110110. The bag already contains cement, sand, and gravel.
Choose it for post holes, patches, small repairs, and jobs where bulk aggregate is not practical.
Pre-mixed bags are convenient but usually cost more per ft3. For larger jobs, Portland cement plus bulk aggregate is usually cheaper, but ready-mix may still beat both on labor and quality.
Cement Bag Sizes: 94 lb, 80 lb, 60 lb & 50 kg
| Bag Size | Volume | Weight | Price | Price/ft3 | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 94 lb | 1.00 ft3 | 94 lb | $12.50 | $12.50 | Standard; 1 ft3 reference bag |
| 80 lb | 0.85 ft3 | 80 lb | $10.80 | $12.69 | Easier to handle |
| 60 lb | 0.64 ft3 | 60 lb | $8.50 | $13.32 | Lighter retail bag |
| 50 kg | 1.17 ft3 | 110 lb | $14.20 | $12.11 | Metric markets |
The 94 lb bag is the standard
One 94 lb bag of Portland cement equals about 1 cubic foot. That is why cement mix ratios use 94 lb bags as the reference. Retail 80 lb bags are easier to carry, but they contain only about 0.85 ft3, so you need more bags.
How to Store Leftover Portland Cement
Portland cement absorbs moisture from air and starts to pre-hydrate. Pre-hydrated cement makes weaker concrete.
Shelf life
Unopened dry bag: 3-6 months. Opened and sealed: 2-4 weeks. Opened in humid air: 24-48 hours.
Best practice
Store off the ground, seal opened bags in heavy plastic, remove air, and use oldest bags first.
Quick test
Good cement flows freely. Cement with hard lumps that do not crumble should be discarded.
Cement Calculator FAQ
How many bags of cement do I need per cubic yard of concrete?+
For a 1:2:3 mix, plan on about 7 bags of 94-lb Portland cement per cubic yard before waste. With 10% waste, most projects round up to 8 bags. Richer mixes need more cement: 1:1.5:3 is about 8 bags per yard and 1:1:2 is about 10 bags per yard.
How many 80 lb bags of cement per cubic yard?+
For a 1:2:3 mix, one cubic yard needs about 8 bags of 80-lb Portland cement before waste. An 80-lb bag contains about 0.85 ft3 of cement, compared with 1.00 ft3 in a 94-lb bag.
What is the difference between Portland cement and concrete mix bags?+
Portland cement is pure cement that must be mixed with sand, gravel, and water. Concrete mix bags already contain cement, sand, and gravel. This calculator is for Portland cement only; use the concrete bag calculator for pre-mixed concrete bags.
How many bags of cement do I need for a 20x20 patio?+
Using the correct volume formula, a 20 x 20 ft patio at 4 inches thick is 4.94 yd3. For a 1:2:3 mix with 10% waste, that is about 37 bags of 94-lb Portland cement, plus sand, gravel, and water.
How much water do I add per bag of Portland cement?+
For a standard 1:2:3 mix at w/c = 0.50, use about 5.5 gallons of water per 94-lb bag of Portland cement. Add water gradually and avoid making the mix soupy.
How long does an opened bag of Portland cement last?+
Opened Portland cement should be used within 24-48 hours in humid conditions, or within 2-4 weeks if sealed in a heavy-duty plastic bag with air removed. Hard lumps that do not crumble mean the cement has pre-hydrated and should be discarded.
Is it cheaper to buy bags or order ready-mix concrete?+
For very small jobs, bags are usually cheaper. Around 1.0-2.5 yd3, cost is often close. Above that, ready-mix usually wins when labor, quality, and continuous pour timing are considered.
